Who would’ve ever predicated that 2020 would kick off in such a frenzy? Who would’ve thought a virus that’s basically invisible to the naked eye could wreak so much havoc? The world is in a crisis, and human beings all over the planet are going through a testing time.
Politicians have been saying, top business leaders have been saying it, and most importantly the front line medical workers are also saying it. Practice social distancing, stay at home! This isn’t about you anymore. It’s about all the people you could potentially infect if you choose to ignore this advice.
Many folks might be thinking “It’s the weekend, I need to get out, I need to meet my friends!” As the great Indian mystic Sadhguru says “If you are miserable when you are alone, you are obviously in bad company.” Make yourself in such a way that you enjoy being alone, that you’re just as joyful being alone as you would be around the company of your friends.
We don’t realise it, but the Coronavirus has given us a chance to transform our lives, by reflecting on all the compulsive behaviours we’ve been numbly exhibiting year after year. Now is the time to transform, people!
Shovel the driveway (for my Canadian readers!), mow the lawn, clean out those boxes in the basement which you’ve been procrastinating for the last 5 years, vacuum the house, try out that new dish you’ve always wanted to, start a meditation or yoga routine and tons more!
Even though you may not realise it, you can still get a decent massage routine going right at the confines of your home. All it takes is a bit of creativity, improvisation, and willingness to experiment and learn!
Here’s 5 tips to get you started!
This is by no means an exhaustive list. The 5 tips below are just some of the many ways to get your massage on while staying at home. Get those creative juices flowing and help me add to the list! Share your tips in the comments below.
I don’t mean scratching each others backs literally! This is especially useful when it comes to spouses who are self isolating together at home. Get your better half to give you a massage, and then reciprocate the same!
If neither of you have ever given a massage before, not to fear. There’s literally tons of awesome videos with trained therapists showing exactly how to deliver a massage. Here’s a video by Massage Sloth that goes over how to give a deep tissue back massage. It’s almost 14 minutes long, but it’s well worth checking out!
It goes without saying but if either you or your spouse is sick, you’ll wanna avoid this tip!
It’s amazing what you can achieve if you put your mind to it! Contrary to popular belief, learning how to massage yourself is not an impossible task. Again, there’s tons of informative videos on YouTube that go into the details of how to massage one’s self. Here’s one you might enjoy!
Folks this is probably one of the only times in our life where we’ll be able to learn something new. Don’t take it for granted! Remember how 3 weeks ago, you were hoping things weren’t as busy as they were in the office? Your wish has been granted! You no longer have that 2 hour back and forth work commute.
Rollers are one of my favourite massage tools! If properly used, rollers can be highly effective. That’s not even the best part….
Here’s a post I previously wrote about the best rollers on the market. It’s definitely worth a read! Having a roller (or two) at home is always a good idea. Not only is it incredibly useful after a strenuous workout, it can also be used to massage the arms, legs, glutes, and back!
In fact you can do more with a roller stick than you can do with your own 2 hands! Don’t believe me? Here’s a video showing how you can roll practically every muscle in your body!
Pretty cool huh? I bet you didn’t expect that! As I said earlier, it’s amazing what you can achieve when you get creative!
Okay maybe we’re diverting a little from massage, but this one’s important so I think it deserves to be mentioned. Reflexology is basically stimulation of specific points on the hands and feet. When these pressure points are stimulated, one can experience a higher state of relaxation with a decrease in stress.
What does reflexology have to do with someone self isolating at home? Why is it important? Stimulating these pressure points are even more important now. Because you’re indoors you might be getting less exercise than you usually would, and your diet might be a little off track as well.
Reflexology can be done solo, or you can have your spouse help out!
Automated options are a great way to keep up with massage while at home. If you’ve been following this blog, you’ll know how much I love automated massage tech!
Pretty much all of these can be found online. The only downside to automated massagers is they tend to be pretty expensive! However, if you can afford the price, investing in any one of these devices is something I can’t recommend enough.
The world is going through a tough phase, and at this time it’s important we all take extra care of ourselves. We must use the power of habit to our benefit. We must take this opportunity to become more active and healthy. Last but not least, we must take this opportunity to do the things we’ve always wanted to do, but never had the time to do!
Be safe, be well, and most importantly….be happy!
