Ohhh The Dreaded Double Chin….Alas!
Welcome back to yet another “fact or fiction” post where we expose all the myths and lay down the truths of your most commonly asked massage questions. There’s a lot of misconception and false information and this is where we debunk all of it!
Before we even start to talk about massage and how effective/ineffective it is at treating this condition, let’s first look at what a double chin is and why it forms to begin with.
What Is A Double Chin & How Does It Form?
According to Healthline, a double chin “is a common condition that occurs when a layer of fat forms below your chin” (source: Healthline). It’s a condition that happens to all people of all ages all over the world. You see it in young people, middle aged people, and old people. It’s definitely more prevalent in older people and likely to form as one ages over time.
Age does play a role, but it’s not the only thing. As you age, your skin tends to lose its elasticity over time. This elasticity is what makes your skin tight, firm, and free of wrinkles. Over time you lose the elasticity and skin on the face starts to loosen. The result of this of course is skin that starts to droop and sag, and the result of this is a double chin, wrinkles and other facial features.
Weight is another aspect, and specifically obesity. If one is obese, he/she has a bigger likelihood of forming a double chin. Genetics is also another reason why someone might have a double chin.
Can You Massage A Double Chin Away?
When most people think of massage, they think of relaxation or a means to use additional funds from their health spending account before the end of the year! Don’t worry I get it, I’m in the same predicament myself.
Pain relief, increased mobility/flexibility, reduced stress levels, better sleep, and we can keep adding to this list! Even things which you think massage would be completely useless, it turns out massage is actually pretty useful. For example, massaging your sinuses might relieve you of stuffiness and congestion, and massaging your wrist might improve carpal tunnel symptoms!
Pretty cool right!? Similarly massage has a place in helping you deal with that pesky, annoying double chin. There are techniques of face, neck, and jaw massage, which if done correctly and consistently can greatly reduce the appearance of a double chin by bringing back some of that “tightness” to the skin.
There’s tons of great videos you can find online showing you how to do these massages, but from all of these there’s one technique I absolutely love, and that’s this one from OlgaToja! (Video Credit: OlgaToja YouTube Channel).
Did you watch the video? What did you think? If you do have a double chin, it’s definitely worth trying out! Post your comments down below and let me know how it worked out for you.
Based on my research, there isn’t any specific massage device that serves the sole purpose of eliminating a double chin. In other words, there’s no such thing as a double chin massager. However, there are face massagers which I guess you could employ, but….
What Else Can You Do To Get Rid Of Your Double Chin?
Massage is definitely something you should be doing on a consistent basis. Aside from this, there are a few other ways to help rid that double chin:
And of course there is surgery, as surgery is an option for pretty much everything these days. If it were me, going under the knife would be my least favourite option and for obvious reasons.
