Can Massage Reduce Double Chin: Fact Or Fiction?

Ohhh The Dreaded Double Chin….Alas!

Welcome back to yet another “fact or fiction” post where we expose all the myths and lay down the truths of your most commonly asked massage questions. There’s a lot of misconception and false information and this is where we debunk all of it!

Today’s post is centred around the dreaded double chin and if massage can actually help reduce/eliminate this condition altogether.

Before we even start to talk about massage and how effective/ineffective it is at treating this condition, let’s first look at what a double chin is and why it forms to begin with.

That Pesky Double Chin!

What Is A Double Chin & How Does It Form?

According to Healthline, a double chin “is a common condition that occurs when a layer of fat forms below your chin” (source: Healthline). It’s a condition that happens to all people of all ages all over the world. You see it in young people, middle aged people, and old people. It’s definitely more prevalent in older people and likely to form as one ages over time.

So why does a double chin happen? Is it age related?

Age does play a role, but it’s not the only thing. As you age, your skin tends to lose its elasticity over time. This elasticity is what makes your skin tight, firm, and free of wrinkles. Over time you lose the elasticity and skin on the face starts to loosen. The result of this of course is skin that starts to droop and sag, and the result of this is a double chin, wrinkles and other facial features.

Age is one aspect, but how is it that teenagers and young adults also have double chins?

Weight is another aspect, and specifically obesity. If one is obese, he/she has a bigger likelihood of forming a double chin. Genetics is also another reason why someone might have a double chin.

The good news of course is that you can take care of the problem! That is by doing a few simple things, you can greatly reduce and even sometimes eliminate your double chin!

Can You Massage A Double Chin Away?

When most people think of massage, they think of relaxation or a means to use additional funds from their health spending account before the end of the year! Don’t worry I get it, I’m in the same predicament myself.

Believe it or not, but massage is far more than a means to relax! Yes it does promote relaxation, but if done correctly it offers so much more.

Pain relief, increased mobility/flexibility, reduced stress levels, better sleep, and we can keep adding to this list! Even things which you think massage would be completely useless, it turns out massage is actually pretty useful. For example, massaging your sinuses might relieve you of stuffiness and congestion, and massaging your wrist might improve carpal tunnel symptoms!

Pretty cool right!? Similarly massage has a place in helping you deal with that pesky, annoying double chin. There are techniques of face, neck, and jaw massage, which if done correctly and consistently can greatly reduce the appearance of a double chin by bringing back some of that “tightness” to the skin.

There’s tons of great videos you can find online showing you how to do these massages, but from all of these there’s one technique I absolutely love, and that’s this one from OlgaToja! (Video Credit: OlgaToja YouTube Channel).

Did you watch the video? What did you think? If you do have a double chin, it’s definitely worth trying out! Post your comments down below and let me know how it worked out for you.

Can you buy a massager to effectively do the same thing?

Based on my research, there isn’t any specific massage device that serves the sole purpose of eliminating a double chin. In other words, there’s no such thing as a double chin massager. However, there are face massagers which I guess you could employ, but….

I think the techniques shown in the video will be most effective if done freehand. Yes it does take a bit to get them right, but when you do, it’s totally worth it!

What Else Can You Do To Get Rid Of Your Double Chin?

Massage is definitely something you should be doing on a consistent basis. Aside from this, there are a few other ways to help rid that double chin:

Lose Weight (Exercise & Diet)—Easier said than done, but this is one of the best ways to lose the double chin forever! As you continuously¬† exercise to lose weight, the additional fat around the jaw will become less.
Incorporate Jaw/Face Exercises—And there’s a ton of awesome ones to choose from! Here’s an article from MedicalNewsToday which lists a few routines. My fav is kiss the sky! What’s yours? Drop a comment and let me know!

And of course there is surgery, as surgery is an option for pretty much everything these days. If it were me, going under the knife would be my least favourite option and for obvious reasons.

That’s all from me. If you have any questions, please be sure to get in touch. Otherwise, take care and good luck getting that pesky double chin gone for good! Consistency is the key ladies/gents. Be safe and most importantly, be well!
