Nothing Quite Like A Japanese Massage Chair!

Today 95% of all massage chairs are designed, manufactured, and assembled from a factory in China. The remaining 5% come from Japan.

The Osaki JP Premium 4S is 100% made in Japan!

Are Japanese massage chairs more superior than Chinese massage chairs? I certainly think so! Why?

Because The Japanese Have Immense Experience!
For the JP Premium 4S, Osaki partnered up with Japanese powerhouse Fujiiryoki. For those of you who don’t know, Fujiiryoki are the guys who produced the first ever massage chair in 1954!
Because Japanese Chairs Are Designed & Built To Last!
There’s a massive difference in quality when it comes to Chinese parts versus Japanese parts. Japanese massage chairs are built to stand the test of time!

If you can afford the price tag, it’s definitely worth your while to consider a Japanese massage chair!

Alright, enough messing about! Let’s look at what makes the Osaki JP Premium 4S one of the most popular massage chairs on the planet!

Osaki JP Premium 4S: 7 Key Features!

#1 4D Rollers—The Most Advanced In Roller Technology!

Rollers: this one single contraption can make or break a massage chair. That’s how important they are! Before we talk about 4D rollers, let’s break things down a little so it’s easy to understand.

To begin with what are rollers?

Rollers are a complex mechanical contraption consisting of “doughnut” shaped discs mounted on a spindle. It’s these “doughnut” shaped discs that are responsible for delivering a massage throughout your back. Here’s what they look like!

JP Premium 4S What Rollers Look Like

What are the different types of roller technology you can find in 2019?

There’s 3 main types: 2D, 3D, and 4D. 2D is the oldest and most basic. 3D is an improvement to 2D (more on this below). And as you’d imagine, 4D is an improvement to 3D. Let’s look at all 3!

2D Rollers
2D Rollers Move Up/Down & Left/Right

This roller type moves in 2 dimensions: up/down from neck to tailbone, and side to side along the width of the back.

3D Rollers
Not The Best Picture, But You Get The Point!

This roller type moves in 3 dimensions. First 2 are the exact same as a 2D chair. The last is an inward/outward movement.

4D Rollers
Speed Control Is What Distinguishes 4D From 3D Rollers

Same as 3D rollers but with one major improvement. 4D rollers automatically adjust and control speed and rhythm.

Is 4D really all that better than 3D?

While there’s a whole lot of marketing involved, 4D is a definite improvement to 3D. Because of the automatic speed control in a 4D chair, massage feels less “machine like” and more “human like”, if that makes sense! And if you think about it, that’s really the purpose of a massage chair: to replicate the hands of a well trained therapist.

#2 It’s Capable Of Deep Tissue Massage!

Deep tissue seems to be the choice of massage in the 21st century. It’s what the “cool” kids are doing these days!

Because its rollers can protrude 4.9 inches inward/outward, the Osaki JP Premium 4S is able to deliver one heck of a deep tissue massage!

Osaki 4S JP Premium Japan Massage Chair Deep Tissue

If you have a ruler beside you, grab it and take a look at what 4.9 inches is! I highly doubt most trained therapists can go as deep as this. And this is really where we start to see the benefits of technology! It’s when we take something that humans can do pretty well, and turn into something that well exceeds that!

#3 It Comes With A Whopping 25 Preset Auto Modes!

Rollers make or break a chair, I said this earlier….but it doesn’t end there. There are other aspects that also need to be considered. One such aspect is a chair’s preset auto modes. Simply said, these are massage routines that have already been customized and programmed into the chair. In other words, they require no setup from the user!

Why are auto modes so important?

Well mostly because no one wants to learn how to use a massage chair. At the end of the day when we’re absolutely knackered, all we really want is to hop into the chair, press one or two buttons, sit back, relax and be blown away! When we have some time, it’s nice to mess around with manual mode, but otherwise auto mode is everyone’s preference!

The more auto modes, the better. No one likes a one trick pony!

So what are these 25 auto modes anyways? The snippet below lists all of them.

Osaki JP Premium 4S Auto Modes

As you can see from the list, the various modes are mostly broken out by area of focus. For example, if you wanted a massage focused on the neck/shoulder area, you would select one of the 4 modes specific to that region. If you wanted a full body massage, you can pick courses from the whole body list. Hope that all makes sense!

The stretch modes in particular look really interesting!

These are 6 minute modes that are designed to stretch the entire body.

#4 Heat Therapy In 2 Different Locations!

Heat therapy is an absolute must have in my opinion. Not only is the sensation of heat comforting to the body, but it’s also been proven to make a massage more effective, as it loosens up the muscles and surrounding tissue. That being said, it’s not uncommon to find heat therapy in a massage chair. Majority of massage chairs all have heat therapy on the lower back area.

The Osaki JP Premium 4S distinguishes itself from the rest by having heat therapy on both the mid back and foot rest areas!

Way to step it up Osaki!

#5 It’s Got 2 Part Body Scanning!

Just like heat therapy, body scan is something you typically see in most massage chairs. However, just like the rollers, body scan technology can be basic or advanced.

The Osaki JP Premium 4S is equipped with a comprehensive 2 part body scan!

The first part involves scanning the user’s spine, all the way from neck to tailbone. The second part involves detecting the user’s shoulder position. Both these parts help the chair to accurately map a user’s back, so the rollers are able to deliver the most customized massage experience!

Osaki 4S JP Premium Body Scan

#6 It Has 34 Airbags To Massage Everything Else!

Rollers are responsible for massaging the neck, shoulders, and back. Airbags are responsible for delivering a compression style massage to pretty much everything else. I’m talking legs, calves, hands and arms, the waist area, and even inside the seat!

Osaki 4S JP Premium Airbags

But this ain’t no ordinary air compression massage!

If you’ve been following along thus far, we’ve seen how Osaki have taken a standard feature (body scans, heat therapy) and improved it significantly on the JP Premium 4S. The airbag design is yet another example of this!

With your standard airbags, you can only typically alter intensity (weak to strong). However, the airbags in this chair are special. In addition to intensity, you can also select from 3 different types of airbag massage!

  • Hand Knead—A kneading compression massage on the hands.
  • Pulse—High intense compression massage that can be selected for any of the airbags.
  • Normal—This is the exact same mode you find on most massage chairs.

Osaki 4S JP Premium 3 Mode Air System

Airbags are way more important than you think. Not only are they responsible for delivering compression massage, but they’re also responsible for ensuring the body stays firmly in place as the rollers do their thing!

#7 It’s Got An Adjustable Foot Ottoman!

This one’s massive, and here’s why. While I can’t stop praising Japanese massage chairs, they do have one major flaw: they’re typically designed to fit the average Japanese male or female body! A quick Google search will tell you that the average male/female height in North America (USA/Canada) is significantly more than that of Japan.

I’m happy to report that this is not an issue on the JP Premium 4S!

Because of the extendable foot ottoman, the chair is able to accommodate anyone ranging from 4’10-6’3 ft., weighing up to a maximum of 285 lbs! For a Japanese chair, let me tell you from experience that this is not something you see often!

Osaki Japan Premium 4S Massage Chair Pros & Cons!

What I Like—Pros

Japanese Designed & Manufactured!
Japanese massage chairs are just that much more superior than everything else. It really boils down to experience, quality of parts, and overall design. They function harmoniously as single unit, and are built to last a lifetime!
The Intensity Range Is Just Incredible!
I’ve seen tons of chairs that can massage at high intensity, but it’s not often you find a chair that can massage at both high and low intensities. The JP Premium 4S is one such chair, as it can do both mild and deep tissue massage.

What I Don’t Like—Cons

The Absence Of Zero Gravity!
You’re unable to recline in a zero gravity position in this chair. This is a big miss as far as i’m concerned. Why? Because zero gravity is one of the most effective positions to massage in given the reduced overall stresses and strains to the body!
No Foot Rollers
As much as I love Japanese chairs, they do have their design drawbacks. One such drawback is the exclusion of foot rollers. We can’t solely rely on the airbags to provide a compression massage, there needs to be rolling and kneading on the feet as well!

JP Premium 4S: 5 Frequently Asked Questions!

Question #1: How Much Does The Chair Cost?

At this current time, the JP Premium 4S is on sale for $5,999 on massage chair deals. This price is a seasonal sale for end of winter, and includes a saving of $3,000 from the original retail price ($8,999). In addition to the $3K savings, you also get an extended 2 year warranty, bringing the total warranty to 5 years.

Question #2: How Much Power Does The Osaki JP Premium 4S Consume?

Japanese chairs are incredibly energy efficient. In comparison to their Chinese counterparts, they consume a fraction of the power. This chair consumes 130 Watts. To put things into perspective: a single light bulb consumes 60 W, so this is about double of that. Impressive to say the least!

Question #3: What About Upholstery? What Material Has Been Used?

The JP Premium 4S is constructed with high end synthetic leather upholstery. Most refer to it as faux leather. Faux leather has several benefits when compared to real leather. For one, it’s much more economical. A chair with real leather would cost a lot more. Two, it’s durable and will not crack or peel like real leather. And three, if done properly faux leather looks aesthetically better!

Question #4: How Easy Is Cleanup & Maintenance?

Faux or synthetic leathers are pretty easy to clean. Unlike real leathers, faux leathers don’t need to be treated or moisturized. For my massage chair, I typically use a damp to wet cloth to gently scrub the affected areas. If I see stains, I use a light dish soap warm water mix and scrub using that. Works like a charm every single time!

Question #5: How Simple Is It To Operate?

Very simple. In fact, i’d say the JP Premium 4S is one of the most foolproof chairs I’ve come across, and I think a lot of that has to do with the remote control layout/design. The remote control only has a few buttons, so it’s pretty easy to understand how everything works. Below is a video that explains the remote control in more detail (all credit to massage chair deals).

How Does The JP Premium 4S Compare To Other Chairs?

Not many 4D chairs in the market, so there isn’t a whole lot to compare against. That being said, I have done reviews on 3 other 4D chairs previously, so let’s compare the JP Premium 4S against those!

Specifically, we will be comparing against the following 3 chairs:

Osaki Pro Maestro
Osaki OS Pro Maestro Taupe

The crème de la crème of massage chairs. Pro Maestro is the only chair I’ve yet to see that has 4D rollers with an extended 52.8” roller track! Here’s the full review.

Osaki JP Premium 4D
4D Pro JP Premium Comparison

This chair is incredibly similar to the JP Premium 4S. Although it does have a shorter roller track and costs quite a bit less! Here’s the full review.

APEX Pro Regent
Pro Regent Comparison

APEX’s flagship model as far as 4D massage chairs are concerned. An incredibly powerful chair with some cool innovative technology! Here’s the full review.

NB: the above table only highlights the key differences between all 4 chairs. I’ve listed what I think is most important!

So What Chair Should You Buy?

We’ve looked at the JP Premium 4S in great detail and seen how it compares against other 4D chairs. But before I move forward with a recommendation, I must ask:

Are you out to look for a 4D chair specifically?

Or are you more flexible in going with a 3D chair? There is no right answer to this. It’s just about having some understanding of what you want before spinning your wheels on 20 different massage chairs!

If your mind is set on a 4D chair, awesome that’s great cause you’ve just narrowed down your search to 4 or 5 chairs!
If you’re uncertain about what you want, have a peek at some of the 3D chairs as, those are pretty darn good as well!

The reason I bring this up is because I don’t want you to make a decision out of haste. It’s well worth your effort getting this all sorted before you buy!

Now then, if you are in the market for a 4D chair, here’s my recommendation!

Both the JP Premium 4S and the Pro Regent are a tad overpriced for my liking, and as you can see there’s not too much difference between them and the much cheaper JP Premium 4D. Therefore, it makes more sense to go for the JP Premium 4D!
